Who Art Thou Dear God?

Original posting date: June 16, 2009

This article is not going to end in… “So this is who God really is.” Let me state this out right at the beginning. This is not a scientific or religious exploration of the biggest mystery of life…nor am I an expert in the psychological, spiritual, or physical fields. I am just another human being, making an attempt to question my purpose on this earth. I am not a very religious person, but I am spiritual.

I recently got to see the PBS documentary ‘The Elegant Universe’. I had always harbored an interest in the philosophy of life…Although my understanding is limited to - 'God' not necessarily as a person, but as an energy that controls our lives, and this universe as the cradle of everything we consider “life”. The String theory blew all my prior concepts away. It opened my eyes to the idea of parallel universes, 11 dimensions, and energy strings as the control system of everything in this universe. I won’t say I understood everything proposed in this documentary. I had a very tough time comprehending that somebody could derive an equation that would corroborate the existence of 11 dimensions in the Universe! But it made me reconsider my concept of 'our' universe. The idea of heaven and hell and God...

I understood, or derived a conclusion from the documentary, that we might be just a drop of water or a cancer cell on a super giant being. If so, how would this super giant being’s universe look, and what would his concept of God be like? And what role would God play in my life since I am all but an insignificant part of that super giant universe? Where are heaven and hell located between these 11 dimensions? And if I die, will I stay in this dimension or be promoted to the next dimension? And do my actions in this dimension play a part in how my life would be in the next dimension, or is my karma mutually exclusive to this dimension only? And do the 11 dimensions have 11 Gods, caring for their own beings? Or is there a God of all Gods? Or is there just one God who is orchestrating this play in all 11 dimensions? And if the answer to the last question is yes, then God is a highly complex and under-appreciated being, and I feel we don't thank him/her enough for coming to our aid at our every beck and call.

I believe that God, or the “control system” of this universe that we call “God,” is an energy. And each one of us has a part of that energy. This energy manifests itself in the form of feelings and thoughts. The spirit may be just a form of energy that controls every living being. It’s the force that creates us, nurtures us, and destroys us eventually. Our thoughts and feelings might be like a software program; pre-programmed in our nervous system, running the machine that is our body…

It’s an interesting life, though. It’s incredible what man has done for himself…the concept of karma is one of special interest to me…that a person should live his life according to the karmic rules so that after death he can go to heaven is interesting …since it tells us to work all our lives to prepare for death! Why is death glorified? Does consciousness cease to exist after death, or is death the real beginning of life? This life sure doesn’t feel like a reward, with all the wars, hate, and destruction in the world. Perhaps we all are dead now, and death, as we call it, is the real beginning of life. Is it the place where we achieve ultimate happiness? Where do we really go after we die? To another dimension, perhaps? Or do we stick around, change form, and go through the life cycle again? So many concepts have been proposed and theories have been laid out by so many people…whom to believe? What should we live by?

What if there is no God, and morality is just a figment of our imagination, created to maintain the balance in the universe so that we don’t fight amongst ourselves and destroy this Earth? I am sure animals don’t have religion or morality and are doing just fine…Why do we have to worry about being religiously correct, then? I may be getting on the verge of sounding agnostic…but it’s all very confusing when you think about it…

Where are we as a life form heading? If the Big Bang created life, what if there’s another bang that wipes us off completely? Would our existence be in vain then? 4.5 billion years of evolution all down the drain? How does morality and global warming matter then? Eventually, we all are going down!

I am not a pessimist, and I am glad we follow the morals and traditions that we do…and I am pleased that mankind has created all this beauty in this world…paintings, sculptures, art, music, dance, buildings…everything that makes our world a special place…But it’s too difficult to understand in the larger perspective…why we are all here, and how does my life plug into this piece of the puzzle?

And the most important thing of all… who is putting the pieces of this puzzle together?

Who art thou, dear God?

I hope I find you one day…

Hey,

Nice post...

The BIG question..who is he ?...hmm..maybe She / It :)

I dont know much abt the string theory, but yes the question remains..is it all energy that is driving us..and then who really are we and where are we headed.

Similar thoughts on "Evoultion or its lack"

I mean isnt it a pradox that on one hand we are evolving and on the other we are disintegrating, so doesnt that supreme energy / being play a part here..

I guess too much of chaos in my own thoughts there :)

Lovely read though :)

Hey Rohini,
Thanks for the comments...ya, if we think about the universe as energy then our purpose sure seems like a mystery...

And yes, I agree with your point that our lack of evolution maybe natures plan to destroy us...

If you think about it this way; that the extinction of some animal species did not make a difference to us...or to the universe for that matter...so maybe our extinction or our lives may not make a difference in the end at all...(if we don't manage to destroy the earth before that i.e....with pollution etc.)

It's interesting to think about the big picture...I wonder as well what's in store for us as humans. And what will come next in the series of evolution...super humans maybe??

Hey...The chaos is in my head too!! :)
